Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: NH-MR-68
Station Name: Contoocook 0.6 NW
Report Date: 4/17/2024
Submitted: 4/17/2024 7:42 PM
Scale Bar: Moderately Wet
Description:
Be careful what you wish for, Dorothy. Last month, I complained of the lack of snow. We got 12.5" of heavy wet snow in the first half of April and 8.1" on March 23-24 totaling 40% of the water year snow total, too late for the closed ski areas. Total water precip is above normal both for the calendar year (152%) and water year (124%). This felt like the 3rd spring melt flood of the year. Usually we have one. Roads suffered serious washouts. High winds on the last storm took down a remarkable number of trees, with tens of thousands without power, some for as long as 5 days. Power is critical for those who pump their own water (estimated 60% of NH). Ironically, a symposium on climate change was postponed due to seasonable weather. Minor flooding, standing water in the fields, and basement flooding was common. Businesses and schools were closed for days. Chainsaw and generator sales probably grew, but much of the rest of the economy took a hit. Sunny and 60° this week will help dry things out.
